You may take your headlights for granted, but it’s extremely important to keep them bright and working well to keep yourself, and others, safe on dark roads. Headlights naturally wear out over time and need replacement every so often. Here are some signs to watch for that let you know it’s time to head down to your Lexus dealer for new headlights.

You Don’t Know When Your Headlights Were Last Replaced

Headlights last an average of five years, or 1000 hours of use before they burn out. If you drive a lot at night, it’s been more than five years, or you don’t even know or remember the last time they were replaced it’s best to invest in some fresh headlights.

One Headlight Is Burned Out

If one or both headlights aren’t in good working order, you risk being a danger on the road or receiving a ticket from law enforcement. If you notice one headlight is not working, you’ll want to replace both as soon as possible. Headlights often come as a pair so it’s best to simply replace both at the same time.

You Notice Your Headlights Aren’t As Bright as They Once Were

Headlights that are brand new are extremely bright before they slowly dim over time. If you see that your headlights are noticeably dimmer, they’re probably coming to the end of their lifecycle and should be replaced.

You Notice Your Headlights Look Hazy

Hazy headlights are often caused by a buildup of dirt and grime, so your first step is to try to clean them with a special headlight cleaner. If the haziness doesn’t improve it likely means your headlights are due to be replaced.

You See Your Headlights Flicker

If you have headlights that flicker or that only work intermittently it usually means they are wearing out and need replacement. However, these issues could also signal a potential wiring issue so be sure to have an inspection to see what the problem is.

Your Lexus Mechanic Suggests You Replace Them

Your mechanic will typically inspect your headlights during routine oil changes and maintenance appointments so they should tell you when you need your headlights replaced, or if they need to be aligned. Check with your mechanic to ensure they do these routine inspections and remember that you can always take your vehicle in for a headlight check anytime you aren’t sure.
