Built on the site of an ancient Swedish settlement, Wilmington, DE, has grown into the largest city in the state and a popular destination full of historical landmarks, museums, cultural centers, and tourist attractions. If you are planning a road trip around the northeastern United States in your 2023 Lexus UX 250H, here are three places you should not miss.

1. Delaware History Museum and Mitchell Center for African American Heritage

Located at 504 N Market Street in the heart of the city center, the Delaware History Museum and Mitchell Center for African American Heritage is a large cultural center where you can learn all about the history of the state through a series of permanent exhibits and historical artifacts. Open Wednesday to Saturday between 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm, this place is one of the main attractions among visitors to the city.

The two largest permanent exhibitions in this museum are titled “Delaware: One State, Many Stories” and “Journey to Freedom.” The former provides a general overview of Delaware’s history from the 17th century to the present day, while the latter is dedicated to portraying the arrival of the Swedish ship that brought one of the first known individuals of African heritage to the shores of the state.

2. Wilmington State Park

Sitting on the banks of Brandywine Creek at 1St Rocco Way, Wilmington State Park is a beautiful green area featuring a paved greenway trail, several historic sites, well-maintained picnic spots, and a zoo. Open Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, this state park was established in 1998 and is divided into four smaller units.

One of the areas you should not miss while walking around Wilmington State Park is the Brandywine unit, which features a mix of wilderness and open space with beautiful views of the creek. At the Rockford unit, you can find Rockford Tower, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, as well as a series of nature trails and scenic viewpoints.

3. Wilmington Riverwalk

Bringing together locals and visitors, the Wilmington Riverwalk is one of the city’s busiest and most beautiful local attractions. Located in the heart of the downtown area, this public park encompasses a mile of scenic boardwalk with great views of the USS North Carolina, as well as plenty of local boutiques, souvenir shops, restaurants, and small cafés on the banks of the Christina River.
