It’s the middle of summer. You’ve just spent all day in your office working and enjoying the cool air the AC unit gives you, but then it’s time to go home. You leave your building and feel the heat radiating from the hot asphalt. You open your car and feel like you’re stepping into an oven. You turn on your AC and… you find the car AC not working! If this happened to you, your Lexus dealer can help.

How Does a Car AC Work?

Do you know the ins and outs of what makes a car AC work? How does it actually cool the air? Understanding these things can help you identify the problems with your unit. To cool off the air, the AC unit makes use of freon, which acts as a cooling liquid. This is the same liquid that is used in many household refrigerators! But if the cool air stays in the AC unit, it doesn’t do much for you!

There is a series of fans that are used to blow the air from the AC unit and out to the car’s cabin and bring you relief from the stifling heat outside. And to keep you from having to buy more freon every time you drive, it is recycled and cooled using a condenser that makes use of fresh air that flows in from the grille.

Freon Leaks

If the freon leaks out of the AC unit, it will eventually run out to the point that it isn’t able to cool the air enough for it to be comfortable. You can tell this has happened if you turn on your AC and the air that comes out is hot. You can add more freon, but that only postpones the service you’ll have to get.

A Lexus technician can figure out where the leak is taking place and replace the faulty components. These could be worn tubing, failing gaskets, or damaged connections.

A Blocked Condenser

The mechanism that cools your freon after it has been used is the condenser. The condenser uses fresh air that flows in from the grille to cool down the freon, so if anything inhibits the airflow through the grille it won’t be able to function properly. A common thing that blocks the grille is debris that flies up from the road or dirt. You can check this yourself, but a Lexus technician can further assist you and fix it.

To get your AC up and running properly again, you need to bring it in to be seen by knowledgeable technicians who you can trust. Don’t look around any further: come by Lexus of Wilmington!
