Bellevue State Park in Wilmington, DE, offers a wide range of activities for everyone to enjoy amid forests and meadows overlooking the Delaware River. There are sports and games, nature explorations, events and programs, and much, much more fun and excitement in the park to experience.
1. Take a Tour of the Historic Bellevue Hall
Visit Bellevue Hall, the grand DuPont family mansion, on one of the scheduled tours. On the guided tours, visitors see the transformation of the mansion from a Gothic Revival castle to what it is today, a replica of the Montpelier home of President James Madison.
2. Picnic in the Magnificent Gardens
Take a stroll through the magnificent arboretum filled with indigenous and exotic plants and trees surrounding Bellevue Hall. This is also an excellent place to enjoy a picnic or just to relax in the beautiful gardens. Surrounding the impressive mansion, there are equestrian stables, tennis courts, and a beautiful pond.
3. Get into the Saddle
Wellspring Farm is an equestrian center where novice and experienced riders, both adults and children can have a safe and pleasurable riding experience. The center has indoor and outdoor arenas and offers horse riding lessons and therapeutic riding as well. The center also has excellent boarding facilities.
4. Hike, Cycle, and Horseback Ride Through the Woods
The scenic paved and unpaved trails in the 28-acre Bellevue Woods Nature Preserve wind through forests, beautiful green meadows, and along the pretty Stoney Creek. Keep your eyes peeled for deer and other wildlife along the way.
Equestrian Trail
On the three-mile trail, riders will experience many different areas in the park. The trail runs through the breathtaking Bellvue Woods Nature Preserve, past the beautiful gardens surrounding the mansion, the Percheron Barn, and the Equestrian Training Center.
Nature Preserve Trail
The 1.2-mile trail follows a part of the Equestrian Trail through the preserve, over the pretty Stoney Creek, and along a beautiful, peaceful meadow.
Oval Track
Jog or cycle and test your endurance on the park’s 1.8-mile Oval Track. The Oval Track that circles the pond used to be equestrian but now features 20 exercise stations.
5. Play a Game of Tennis
The Bellevue Tennis Center has eight clay courts. The center offers tennis lessons and various instructional and social tennis programs.
6. Fish in the Pond
The picturesque catch-and-release pond offers anglers a tranquil fishing experience in beautiful surroundings. Here you can fish from the banks for catfish, sunfish, and bass.
7. Exiting Winter Activities
During the winter months, the park offers loads of outdoor fun and excitement. Here you can ice skate outdoors, sled down the hills, and cross-country ski to your heart’s content.
8. Enjoy Concerts and Performances
Pack your picnic basket and enjoy the free Summer Concert Series at the park’s bandshell from June right through to August. The park hosts these exciting concerts and performances on Thursday and Sunday evenings and at lunchtime on Wednesdays.
