Bike on trail

Wilmington, DE, is a historic city that offers plenty to do. One fun activity that is very popular with everyone of all ages is biking, and the area has no shortage of bike paths. Whether you are looking to get a good workout or just get some fresh air there is certainly an option ready for you.

1. Northern Delaware Greenway Trail

This trail that is full of curves comes in at just under 10.5 miles and is not challenging at all. There are also many points of interest to check out on the trail including Blue Ball Barn, and Rockwood Museum. The trail is used by commuters during the week, so it is well maintained, there are plenty of parking options and connects to other trails in the area.

2. Brandywine Trail

A short 2.9 miles, this mostly stone trail is a nature lover’s paradise. It runs along with the Brandywine Creek for its duration and there are many flowers and animals along the path to keep it visually appealing. First State National Park also has a parking lot that offers free parking by the northern end of the trail.

3. New Castle Battery Park Trail

This is most beautiful around sunrise and sunset. The trail is only 1.5 miles and starts at the popular Battery Park, following the Delaware River from there. The park may be popular but the trail is never too crowded and also happens to be close to a beach.

4. Jack A. Markell Trail

This 5.5-mile trail used to be known as the Industrial Track Greenway Trail before being renamed after the former state governor. The route includes scenic views of birds, bridges, and the Christina River among other things. It is a smooth trail that is also part of the larger East Coast Greenway that will hopefully one day connect from Maine to Florida.

5. James F. Hall Trail

At 1.8 miles, an excellent feature of this trail is that it is nonstop because it never intersects with a road. There are also an abundance of playgrounds, picnic areas, and benches along the trail. Any train enthusiast will also enjoy that it is right next to train tracks with a large fence separating the two for guaranteed safety.

6. Michael Castle Trail

The Michael Castle Trail offers it all for those who are looking to sightsee on their ride. You can expect to see ships, trees, flowers, and all sorts of different animals as you cruise along the 12.4 miles that make the trail up.
The trail will take you into Maryland as it connects the Chesapeake Bay with the Delaware River, but there are great restaurants and ice cream shops there to keep you well-fed.
