Washington, DC

First settled as “New Sweden” in 1638 when a Swedish ship found a natural wharf, Wilmington, DE is now the hub of the area and is the largest downtown in Delaware. This city offers the best of both worlds; gems of the past and hipness of the present. Rich with culture, history, and entertainment, this is a great place to live.

1. History

Being such an old settlement, you can imagine that there are many historic sights to see. Here is just a short list of places to visit:

Winterthur Estate

Built in 1837, this grand mansion belonged to the du Pont family. Yes, that du Pont family. With stunning interiors and 1000 acres of grounds that include beautiful gardens, this sight is worth a visit.

Chadds Ford Historical Museum

Three 18th century homes house this historical museum. Guided tours are available and many events take place here throughout the year.

Delaware History Trail

This trail takes you to multiple significant sights throughout the area. You can download a passport and at the end of the tour receive a special gift.

First State National Historical Park

Stretching the whole length of Delaware, this park includes an original church, plantation, a fort, and historic home. Access to so many historical sights makes for an exciting place to live.

2. Commerce

Being a bustling center for banking, innovation, and technology, business and employment opportunities abound. AstraZeneca, DuPont, and Incyte are just a few of the companies headquartered here. The bustling downtown area is bursting with dining, shopping, and entertainment options as well.

3. Location

Truly in the center of it all, Wilmington is commutable to several major cities. Philadelphia, Washington D.C., New York City, and Baltimore can all be reached in two hours or less, while other huge cities like Boston and Raleigh/Durham are only 6 hours away. I-95 is easily accessible, as well as rail systems that connect to other major cities.

4. So Much to Do

There’s always something going on here, and activities for every taste. In the mood for music or the arts? Check out the annual Riverfront Blues Festival. Take the kids to the Delaware Children’s Museum. Peruse the masterpieces at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts. Want to try some new brews and eats? Hit the Wilmington Brew Works, a 4000 square foot brewery, where you can sample a lot of different beers, eat from the many food trucks, and hey, have fun! Just remember to drink responsibly. And Eclipse Bistro and Trolley Square Oyster House are just a couple of our favorite spots for dining.
If outdoor fun is your favorite, visit one of the many parks, wildlife refuges, and equestrian centers. Do you fish? The Brandywine Valley is teeming with rivers and streams, stocked with varied fish species. The Brandywine Zoo, located downtown, has over 150 different species of animals and rotating events throughout the year.

These are just a few of the reasons to love living here. What are your favorite things? Stop in to Lexus of Wilmington and let us know!
