1. Elk Neck State Park
Spanning an area of more than 2,300 acres, the Elk Neck State Park is located in the southern end of the Elk Neck Peninsula, a little over 35 miles southwest of downtown Wilmington. This state park offers more than 250 campsites divided into two sections, with the main campground featuring rustic cabins, camper cabins, and tent pitches, and the second one being reserved for larger groups. Getting to this beautiful destination from Wilmington takes less than an hour by car.
Apart from being an ideal place for campers and wildlife enthusiasts, the Elk Neck State Park offers visitors a vast array of activities and outdoor sports. The park features seven hiking and biking trails with a combined distance of 12 miles, as well as a swimming beach, fishing spots, and a boat ramp. There are also picnic tables, shelters, and public grills for visitors.
2. Nockamixon State Park
With an area of more than 5,000 acres, the Nockamixon State Park is located just 70 miles away from downtown Wilmington, making it possible to reach it in about an hour and a half by car. This beautiful destination is a top-rated destination among visitors from Philadelphia, New York, and other cities in the area. For those wanting to stay overnight, it offers several campsites, as well as 10 modern cabins equipped with a kitchen, a living room, toilets, and showers.
Apart from the cozy cabins and well-equipped campsites, the Nockamixon State Park is popular for its stunning views of Lake Nockamixon and the surrounding areas. Some of the most popular outdoor activities in the area include boating, fishing, hiking, and hunting. During the winter months, the park remains open, and visitors can practice ice skating and ice fishing on the frozen lake. Although there are no entrance fees at the park, visitors are recommended to reserve their campsites in advance.
3. Wharton State Forest
Located less than 50 miles east of Wilmington, the Wharton State Forest is the largest state forest in the state of New Jersey and an excellent spot for campers from all over the region. This nature escape features both serviced and primitive campsites, as well as nine fully equipped cabins with fireplaces, outdoor campfire rings, toilets, and showers. Getting here takes about an hour by car, driving along route I-295.
