Located in the northern tip of the state and along the banks of the Delaware River, the city of Wilmington, DE has a population of about 70,000. Surrounded by different bodies of water, it is close to some excellent fishing spots where anglers from all over the region come to cast their lines and enjoy some quality time with friends or family. 1. Lums Pond State Park

Established in 1963 and managed by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Lums Pond State Park features an area of almost 1,800 acres and is a popular recreational destination among visitors from Wilmington and other nearby towns and cities. Lums Pond, the main attraction in the area, was created after the construction of a nearby impoundment and served as the main source of water for an old canal connecting the Delaware River and the Chesapeake Bay.

Getting to Lums Pond State Park from downtown Wilmington takes about 25 minutes by car, driving southwest along route I-95 S. Some of the most commonly found species in the pond include carp, catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, and hybrid striped bass. Besides fishing, Lumps Pond State Park also features the Lum’s Mill House, a historic brick structure built in the early 18th Century and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

2. Ridley Creek State Park

Featuring a surface area of more than 2,600 acres in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania, Ridley Creek State Park can be reached in a little over half an hour by car from Wilmington, driving along routes I-95 and PA-452. Some of the highlights in the area include a series of hiking trails, an arboretum, some historical buildings, and a creek where anglers from all over the region come to try their luck with the local fish species.

A tributary of the Delaware River, Ridley Creek has a length of more than 23 miles and is a popular fishing destination among anglers from Wilmington, Philadelphia, and other cities in the northeastern United States. The place is regularly stocked with trout and is also home to some excellent specimens of channel catfish. Besides fishing, Ridley Creek State Park is a great place for hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, boating, and wildlife watching.

3. Marsh Creek State Park

Home to some excellent specimens of muskellunge, largemouth bass, black crappie, walleye, and channel catfish, Marsh Creek State Park is located less than 30 miles northwest of downtown Wilmington and is an excellent day trip or weekend destination for visitors looking for places to cast their lines and enjoy some time with family or friends. Some other activities in this state park include canoeing, sailing, boating, hunting, hiking, and mountain biking.
